Windows defender is a free antivirus that come free for you from windows 8.1 to windows 10. This is the first defence you have in your computer but, as soon as you install a new antivirus, Defender will be automatically disabled (most of the times). It seems a good thing to have always on at least one antivirus and in the 99% of the case it is a good thing. But there are some cases where you don’t need (or want)  an active antivirus on your PC.

Temporary disable Windows defender

  1. Go To Setting
  2. Update and Security
  3. Windows Defender
  4. Turn off Real-Time protection

. Now it's disabled, usually until you reboot the system.

Local Group Policy to disable Windows Defender

This method work only if you have Windows 10 pro, Windows 10
Enterprise or Windows 10 Education.

  1. Open the local group policy using Windows key + r to open the run command
  2. type gpedit.msc
  3. click OK
  4. Go to the path Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender
  5. Double click on Turn off Windows Defender
  6. Select Eneabled to disable Defender
  7. click Apply
  8. click OK

Now your Windows Defender is disabled. If you want to re-enable it just follow the previous passages and select Not Configured.

 

Using Registry to disable Windows Defender

This method is specially useful if you are running Windows Home.

Changing registry values can  be very dangerous
so take that in mind before trying this method, or at least do a full registry backup.

  1. To open the registry open the Run program with Windows + r
  2. type regedit
  3. click OK
  4. Browse the path  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
  5. You should see DWORD DisableAntiSpyware but if not
    1. right click on an empty space
    2. select new
    3. click on DWORD (32 bit) Value
    4. name the key DisableAntiSpyware
  6. Double click this key
  7. change the value from 0 to 1
  8. restart your pc
  9. yuo’ve disable Defender!
